In Beijing's Hutongs, most of the residents are elderly, and the Hutongs themselves are gradually being demolished, renovated, and transformed from residential areas into tourist attractions or landscapes for visitors to admire. The Hutong residents watch themselves age and see their ancestral homes, where generations have lived, slowly disappear along with their own lives. Day and night, they endure the noise of construction, standing helplessly as witnesses and participants of the Hutongs' once glorious history.
